BIO

Ashia Monet (she/her) writes genre-bending horror fantasy novels. She has a particular love for the gothic genre, melodramatic plotlines, and LGBTQ+ casts.

Her debut, THE LAST NECROMANCER OF MARNE HALL (forthcoming from Del Rey, July 2027) follows the mysterious disappearances of the world’s last necromancers from an isolated manor off the coast of Edinburgh in 1976. She also has short stories in the Black horror anthologies CAN’T YOU SEE IT’S COMING and ALL THESE SUNKEN SOULS. She is represented by Emily Forney at Bookends Literary.

During the day, she works as a private practice therapist. She currently lives in New York City but has yet to really, truly understand its subway system. Find her on Instagram/Tiktok (@ashiawrites) and X/Twitter (@ashiamonet).

MSWL

I am looking for adult / upper YA crossover horror, fantasy, sci-fi, literary fiction, and thrillers. If you have a thoughtful, clever, intentional book that also happens to be unhinged: show it to me! I love a novel that breaks genre conventions, even if it struggles to find commercial comps (that’s something we can work on together).

Industry professionals love talking about a writer’s “voice”—you’ve probably heard it in the querying trenches. I’d love to help you strengthen your voice into something unique and unforgettable. That probably means digging into your inspiration and motivation as a writer to find the gold nuggets within (because, trust me, they’re there).

As a former Pitch Wars mentee, I understand the impact a strong mentorship can have. Every writer has a unique authorial voice. My goal is to help you find yours, and to cheerlead for you through your publishing journey!

THINGS I LOVE ACROSS GENRES:

  • BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and neurodiverse casts, especially written by marginalized authors

  • Gothic genre elements: think strange familial relationships, isolated settings, the past haunting the present, a focus on literary prose, tragic romance, etc.

  • Weird Girl Lit! Weird Girl Horror! All the weird girl stuff!

  • Atmospheric settings that feel like another member of the cast

  • Genre mashups (horror fantasy, sci-fi thriller, fantasy mystery, etc.)

  • Humor! I love to have a giggle: think banter, quips, or a clever narrator!

  • Lesbians!!! Especially lesbian characters written by a lesbian!

  • Technology in a Frankenstein-esque, philosophical rather than technical, sort of way. Or fifteen minutes into the future, like in Ling Ling Huang’s work!

  • I enjoy “dark romance”-style relationships more than “feel good”, fuzzy romance. Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal is my favorite love story.

  • I LOVE watching characters try their best in a bleak, unforgiving world, by making the best of what little they have (think The Last of Us or Hadestown)

  • Anything about female friendship, femininity, womanhood, motherhood, sisterhood, etc. I’m a girl’s girl!

  • Divorce! Exes! They don’t even have to get back together again! I just love the drama!!!

  • Similarly, I adore love triangles. As you’re probably picking up, I love complex relationships :)

  • Thematically exploring faith and religion without evangelizing. I am more interested in its impact on people, societies, laws, etc. Also, I love a hot priest and/or nun

BELOVED MEDIA:

Novels: Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Sula by Toni Morrison. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin. Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang. Bunny by Mona Awad. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden. You Weren’t Meant to be Human by AJ White

Films: Sinners. Nosferatu. Obsession. The Substance. Wake Up, Dead Man. Challengers. Ex-Machina. Project Hail Mary. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Crash. Corpse Bride. Mulholland Drive. Anatomy of a Fall.

TV Shows: Killing Eve. Hannibal. Succession. House of the Dragon. Twin Peaks. Castlevania. Brand New Cherry Flavor. Midnight Mass.

NOT THE BEST FIT:

  • Anything cozy

  • Romance without the other genre elements listed above

  • Hard sci-fi focused on nuances of science/technology

  • “Alpha male”-style cishet male love interests. I’ll gag.
