I’m fairly open, but to give a sense of my tastes, my 2026 most-read genres on StoryGraph are LGBTQIA+, followed by Horror, Romance, and Fantasy.
So, I’ll likely be most help to writers that lean into darkness to some degree. It can be any variety – literary or commercial, secondary or primary world – but I’m partial to a supernatural element. More in the vein of occult, cosmic, monster, and body horror, rather than slashers.
That said, I thoroughly enjoy trippy psychological horror with unhinged, murderous FMCs á la Boy Parts, Maeve Fly, and The Eyes Are The Best Part. I’d be keen to see morally grey characters and anti-heroes, but I’m open to lighter, more whimsical shades of horror too, with a comedic tone or a cosy/slice-of-life setting.
Although my favourite reads tend to have at least a romantic subplot, that’s not a deal-breaker. Fun, witty banter is something I always appreciate in a story, no matter what the core relationships are.
If it’s SFF, it could be epic fantasy, urban fantasy, cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic, whatever you’re into. I’m drawn to intricate world-building and magic systems with deep lore, and I certainly won’t say no to a set piece boss battle.
I welcome most things creepy, dark, and gross, but I’m not the right fit for projects with strong themes/graphic depictions of sexual threat/violence.
Some of my favourite reads from the last year are:
The Works of Vermin by Hiron Ennes
The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren
The Red Winter by Cameron Sullivan
Solace House by Will Maclean
The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling
There Is No Antimemetics Division by qntm
The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson
The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett
