BIO

Ellen Mulholland (she/her) is a middle grade author, writing mostly grounded fantasy, featuring nature and our relationship with it at its core. In addition, Ellen’s work explores how young people move through the world with invisible challenges. Drawing from her own experience with generalized anxiety, she crafts characters whose lives aren’t defined by neurodivergence but enriched by the ways they navigate it. She has two novels out through Logos Publishing: THIS GIRL CLIMBS TREES (MG) and BIRDS ON A WIRE (YA).

Ellen is a native Californian and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. After spending her early years in Southern California and graduating from USC with an English and Journalism degree, she transplanted to London for two years, writing, taking odd jobs, and finding herself. Finally returning to the U.S., she moved to Northern California to earn her teaching credential after discovering journalism did not fill her heart. She pursued writing, publishing two books and winning RevPit in 2018. In 2023, she retired after 34 years teaching mostly middle school English. She now spends her days writing, swimming, kayaking, and enjoying the great outdoors.

Ellen is represented by Rebecca Angus at Howland Literary. She has two MG fantasy novels on submission along with a chapter book series featuring misfit monsters. Ellen loves stories with humor, lyrical voices, rich settings, and a diverse cast of characters.

MSWL

I’m drawn to middle grade stories that feature strong girls, characters who grow, a fast-paced plot, and lush settings. I lean toward magical realism and grounded fantasy over complex high fantasy. If I need a map or a glossary, the story is not for me. I don’t tolerate any -isms or bullying for humor’s sake in stories.

Some of my favorite MG fantasy/magical realism include: The Curse of Eelgrass Bog by Mary Averling; The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill; The Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

Contemporary stories: nearly anything by Kate DiCamillo but especially Because of Winn Dixie; The Adventure is Now by Jess Redman; Olivetti by Allie Millington

Creepy, spooky stories: The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier; The Clackity series by Lora Senf; The Bellwoods Game by Celia Krampien

While I am not the best fit for sci fi, I did love The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera for its character growth and detailed setting and The First State of Being by Erin Entrada Kelly for her amazing storytelling.

As your mentor, I will be your number one fan while pushing you hard to make your story shine. The middle grade market is rough right now, but certain stories and styles stand out. I want to help your dream come true, so expect a challenge. I have a library of craft books that support my journey and I hope to pass on what I’ve learned. Previous mentees of mine have gone on to sign with agents.
