BIO

Jason Langford (he/him) is a writer and lover of all things fantasy, especially queer fantasy. He’s always looking for more queer/trans rep in the sci-fi/fantasy worlds he reads. He’ll read any fantasy, from a doorstopper like Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time to a fun middle-grade like Katherine Rundell’s Impossible Creatures. He has a sweet spot for portal fantasy, and Narnia is an old favorite. Above all, Jason wants trans kids to be able to see themselves in books.

He is represented by Michaela Whatnall (they/them) at Dystel, Goderich, and Bourret literary agency. His day job is working as a bookseller in New England.

I am looking for young adult and middle grade books that truly see kids, and don’t talk down to them. For me, an excellent YA or MG book treats kids as mature people. I love fantasy, and recently I’ve been seeing the value in a good science fiction novel. I’m on the ace spectrum, but I do love a good love story!

For me, what makes a book stand out is its setting and characters. I love Wheel of Time for example because it’s a post-apocalyptic fantasy (though yes that is adult—I’d love to see a YA version!!). Stories that are epic in scope also call to me. The novel that got me an agent is dual-POV, so I have experience with that as well.

I want to see queer stories where the queer characters triumph! I’d love to see lgbtq+ kids go where they’ve previously not been allowed to go, in genres like fantasy and science fiction. In all genres I’m seeking, I’d like to see what’s being written by marginalized authors (queer, BIPOC, disabled, neurodiverse).
